This third installment in the Hearts series tells the tale of Oliver King, affectionately known as "King", a character who piqued my interest in the second book. We learn about his life, love, and the struggles he encountered along the way. The story is well paced, well written, and full of hope and intrigue. There are also heart wrenching moments entwined with plenty of steamy romance.

The mysterious, quirky, and often cantankerous character, King, has lived many lives. And as the story unfolds, we discover the complexity of his character, and the hardships he was forced to endure. We also meet Alexis, who enters his life unexpectedly and, in many ways, throws him off course. As a prominent banker, his primary focus is excelling at the game. But suddenly, that is all changing for both of them. In love and in life, some obstacles may be too big to overcome...
"All I could do was nod, and in the next second we both seemed to understand that we were completely and totally screwed. No way was this going to be a one-time thing."
They were from different worlds, and on different planes. But behind the strong, confident exterior, King is harboring secrets, and eventually they would be uncovered. Once Alexis discovers the truth, will their love survive?

The story is told from both before and after significant periods in King's life. And although I appreciated the history, and learning about what led him down a certain path, I wanted more of the "after". Still, it was a meaningful tale that added depth and purpose to the characters, and to the series.
