From gun crime to petty theft

Book Review - Tainted Kiss by Sharon Kay

Tainted Kiss (Watcher's Kiss, #1)
by Sharon Kay
Published 2015
298 Pages

I was thrilled to discover this new spin off series by the author of the Solsti Prophecy, and this first book in the series did not disappoint! We meet up with the Lash demons and other beloved characters from the first series, and get to know the Watchers, an elite band of Lash demon warriors. Wow! Super sexy, the pages are filled with steamy romance, gorgeous alpha males, and strong female characters who really know how to kick ass. The story is rich with detail and well paced, with plenty of twists and turns to keep you on your toes!

Ria is the sister of the demon warrior, Mathias. And as a female warrior, she is equally formidable. When she is injured the leader, Arawn, becomes increasingly protective of her. The witches have shared their insight into his future, but he doesn't believe he can find love again -- it certainly hasn't been on his radar. But now, with Ria sparking new feelings, he wonders...

But he is keeping a dark secret, not just from Ria, but from the entire warrior band. If the secret comes out, the world of the Lash demons -- as they've known it to be -- will be turned upside down. But keeping a secret from Ria is wearing on him, and the enemy is drawing near. It may be his only chance for love, but the risks are too great. He must act... before it's too late.

A great start to the series! Love the author's writing style, humor, and wit. A fresh plot, fully developed characters, and an enchanting setting combine to make this book a must read for anyone who enjoys paranormal romance!

Book Review - King of Hearts by L.H. Cosway

King of Hearts (Hearts, #3)
by L.H. Cosway
Published 2015
356 Pages

This third installment in the Hearts series tells the tale of Oliver King, affectionately known as "King", a character who piqued my interest in the second book. We learn about his life, love, and the struggles he encountered along the way. The story is well paced, well written, and full of hope and intrigue. There are also heart wrenching moments entwined with plenty of steamy romance.

The mysterious, quirky, and often cantankerous character, King, has lived many lives. And as the story unfolds, we discover the complexity of his character, and the hardships he was forced to endure. We also meet Alexis, who enters his life unexpectedly and, in many ways, throws him off course. As a prominent banker, his primary focus is excelling at the game. But suddenly, that is all changing for both of them. In love and in life, some obstacles may be too big to overcome...
"All I could do was nod, and in the next second we both seemed to understand that we were completely and totally screwed. No way was this going to be a one-time thing."
They were from different worlds, and on different planes. But behind the strong, confident exterior, King is harboring secrets, and eventually they would be uncovered. Once Alexis discovers the truth, will their love survive?

The story is told from both before and after significant periods in King's life. And although I appreciated the history, and learning about what led him down a certain path, I wanted more of the "after". Still, it was a meaningful tale that added depth and purpose to the characters, and to the series.

Book Release - King of Hearts by L.H. Cosway

New Release and Giveaway!

King of Hearts
(Hearts, #3)

About the Book

Welcome to the City, London’s most prestigious square mile, where finance reigns and Oliver King is a rising prince.

I used to rule the world.

There might be wolves on Wall Street, but there were crocodiles in Canary Wharf. Some of us craved money. Some of us craved power.

I liked money, and power had its advantages, but what I really wanted was to excel, to surpass the men who came before me. I never cared much for love and romance until I met Alexis.

I could feel it the very moment she walked into the interview, with her outspoken charm and vivacious personality. She cast all the others in shadow, made me laugh when life held no humour. Our friendship should have remained professional, but it wasn’t long before the lines started to blur.

You know what they say about the best laid plans of mice and men? Well, I never foresaw where my plans would lead, and only in my darkest hour did I finally see the light…

You can have all the money and prestige in the world and still be the poorest man alive. And love, well, I hate to use a tired old cliché, but love can be the thing that truly sets you free.

What he said made me curious, so I went on, “What do you do to deal with the stress?”
He gave me a wan smile, and there was something in his expression that struck me as sad somehow. Rubbing at his chin, he answered, “Hmmm, when I’m stressed out…a nice glass of top shelf whiskey usually does the trick.”
“That makes sense,” I said and walked around his desk before taking a seat in front of him. “You know, I always thought it was poor people who did drugs, to escape the bleakness of their realities. Now I’m thinking maybe the practice is most common at the top and the bottom of the ladder. Perhaps the best place to be is somewhere in the middle.”
“Not necessarily. I’m at the top. Do I look high to you?”
The deadpan way in which he said it made me laugh. I leaned forward and teased, “I’m not sure. Let me have a look at your pupils.” Surprising me, King rose from his seat, walked around his desk and came to kneel in front of me. Before I knew it his face was mere inches from mine.
“Go ahead,” he said, voice low.
Whoa, Oliver King’s face right up close…I wasn’t sure what to do with that. I guess he didn’t realise the effect he had on this very non-gay lady, because he seemed entirely unselfconscious. His eyes were beautiful, his lashes long and golden, his skin smooth with a hint of stubble around his jaw, and his lips were just…I had no words. Sculpted and masculine was probably the only way I could think to describe them.
I realised I was staring at those lips a little too closely when my eyes flicked back to his. A moment ago he was smiling, but now that smile was transforming into a thoughtful frown.
I cleared my throat. “Your pupils look fine.”
King exhaled a small breath and I watched as his attention went from my eyes to my cheeks, nose, chin, and then finally to my lips. He looked like he was about to say something when suddenly Gillian’s voice filled the room.

“Mr King, Jenson Gellar is on the phone. Shall I put him through?”

Book Review - City of Fae by Pippa DaCosta

City of Fae
by Pippa DaCosta
Published 2015
336 Pages

Such a great story! City of Fae drew me in, and kept me hooked till the end! Fascinating characters, a compelling plot, and plenty of twists and turns create a unique adventure. Set in London, the journey begins with humans living alongside the fae, with rules established as to their interactions and contact. On the surface things seem to be working, with both humans and fae living cooperatively... but things aren't always as they seem.

Alina is a likable and intelligent character. When she stumbles upon the troubled fae rock star, Reign, she is cautious -- she knows the laws and risks surrounding physical contact with the fae. But as a journalist, she can't help thinking that this chance meeting could land her a story. So, she assists Reign, with a plan to gather information. But he seems to be around every corner now... and she wonders just who is doing the investigating.

"You believe you know what's happening here. You don't. This isn't my story Alina, it's yours."
Reign's keen interest in Alina is peculiar. She wonders if she's being bespelled by the handsome and irresistible Reign. But when he shows her another side to his world, the pieces of the puzzle begin to fall into place. And soon she discovers that the world she believed to exist is far different from anything she could have ever imagined.

I am always excited to find a story that catches me off guard, and I can say that this one genuinely surprised me! There were some frightening moments, plenty of wit, and romantic elements that flowed naturally from one passage to the next. Magical, fast paced, and well written, I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys urban fantasy with great characters and a world that's easy to escape into. A must read!

Book Review - Dissident by Cecilia London

Dissident (Bellator Saga, #1)
by Cecilia London
Published 2015
274 Pages

Jack and Caroline are on the run in a snow storm, trying to stay one step ahead of the soldiers who ran them off the road. They are protecting a flash drive, and as they make their way along their journey there are flashbacks, and little tidbits that clue us in to what they are protecting, and who is waiting for them on the other end.

Caroline, a young woman with two daughters; and Jack, a millionaire with political ties, are brought together in a time of political turmoil, where states are breaking off from the union, and no one in any form of political position of power can be trusted. As Caroline lies unconscious in a medical facility, after reaching out to Jack for help, the medical personnel attempt to keep her in a medically induced coma to protect her from the torture and trial for treason that awaits her.

So, how did these two characters meet and uncover a web of lies in the government and military? All of this is superbly explained with great character details, and a very realistic tale of the relationship between two unlikely allies in a time of political unrest. And while there is a good amount of detail surrounding the character development, the passages flow naturally, allowing the reader to stay engaged in the story that is unfolding.

Romantic elements are interwoven into the plot, without being contrived. This story lays out a foundation that is sure to be an engaging series, and I can't wait for the next installment! I thoroughly enjoyed the story, and highly recommend it to any reader with a varied preference in genres. There are elements of romance and suspense, with a futuristic backdrop, and sexy love scenes. And the writing is witty and sassy, with a compelling plot that leaves plenty of room for more! Kudos to the author for an excellent start to the series!
