Witch Road to Take and Quest for the Keys
(The Mystical Witch Series)
by April M. Reign

Witch Road to Take (The Mystical Witch Series, Book #1)

Dhellia has run away from home to escape her undesirable duties as princess of the underworld. A three-month road trip “upstairs” convinces her human-witch side that Earth is where she belongs.
Unfortunately, her father isn't seeing things her way. Her brother, who is a soul catcher and her protector, snatches her away and hides her in the apartment of a bumbling wizard who casts a cloaking spell on her, and a geeky vampire rock ‘n roll singer who is allergic to human blood. Dhellia gets a job in a law office and suddenly, her future is full of possibilities—that is, until a collision of fate and destiny create the perfect storm, which puts her and her friends in peril. Once again on the run from her father's minions, Dhellia and her friends must find a way to survive while she discovers the powers that lie within her.

Quest for the Keys (The Mystical Witch Series, Book #2)

Dhellia is still on the run from her father who wants her to take her rightful place as princess of the underworld, which would include duties that conflict with her compassionate, witty, and human-witch personality.
Dhellia has a falling-out with her sweet but annoying roommates, a falling-in with her handsome boss, Quinn, and a conflict with her brother, Damien, who is really taking a lot of heat from their father for her disappearance. To make matters worse, Damien also disapproves of her growing connection with Quinn, whom he doesn't trust one bit. That alone has pitted the siblings against each other as Dhellia searches for her independence and Damien tries to keep her safe. While on a quest for the other “keys,” Dhellia recovers two artifacts that contain the most dangerous secrets on Earth, ones that could, in the wrong hands, turn the tables between good and evil. Dhellia gears up to prepare to battle “downstairs” in a way that no other witch ever has--aside from her mother. Dhellia's birthright is princess of the underworld--she's mad as Hell about it, and is determined to use her powers to beat her father at his own game!

Book Review - Wicked Waves by Sharon Kay

Wicked Waves (Solsti Prophecy, #2)
by Sharon Kay
Published 2013

357 Pages

In a small condo in Chicago, Kai watches Brooke sleep. It gnaws at him that she lives alone. And although the building is fully warded, he still worries about her safety. Further, he recognizes that his interest in Brooke goes beyond that of protection. And given his past, these new feelings are... perplexing.
"Kai, who took pleasure in bedding as many women as he wanted, was stymied by one willful brunette. But Brooke wasn't just any brunette. The entire supernatural world believes her existence to be a myth."
As a Solsti, Brooke's powers will one day be unmatched. However, she is still in training. And having been raised a human, Kai worries that she is suppressing her senses, leaving herself vulnerable. As a Lash demon, he knows what the legends say about the Solsti. And while she will be protected by the Lash demons, there are others who would want her dead. Thus, checking in on Brooke has become a regular occurrence. Independent and capable, the arrogant Kai is the last demon Brooke would want checking in on her! And so, his stealthy visits continue.

Having been at each other's throats since day one, Brooke is annoyed at the idea that she and Kai will have to take a trip to Torth as a team. Visiting the other realm is always a risky venture. Still, it is necessary. But she does need to practice her ability to manipulate water. And so, there is an upside: after being stifled for so long, the supernatural realm of Torth offers freedom from being discovered by the humans! No more practicing in her bathtub, she will find the biggest water sources in Torth, and learn to manipulate water on the grandest scale imaginable. And no one, least of all Kai, will get in her way.

There was so much going on in this book, but I never felt lost or confused! The author creates an enchanting world with interesting inhabitants that are both fearsome and formidable. And there is beauty and magic around every bend! From the barren wastelands to the lush forests, every river, wave, leaf, and drop of water comes to life! I really felt like the world the author created just popped off the pages. But nothing was gratuitous. This is a magical journey for the characters, as well as the reader!

As for the characters, they were charming, fully developed, and believable. The struggles between Kai and Brooke were not contrived. And I appreciated that Brooke wasn't falling all over Kai from the beginning, just because of his physical charms. The characters stayed true throughout the story. However, we do discover Kai's backstory, and thus gain some understanding as to why he presents as guarded and arrogant. Moreover, his protective nature is always in the forefront, and you can't help but see the diamond in the rough.

Eventually, things heat up between Kai and Brooke, and all the descriptive details you could hope for are imagined! We also encounter someone from Kai's past, and plenty of other characters that add depth and meaning to the story, as a whole. My favorite scene was the river scene, whereby Kai and Brooke have to make a quick escape... a river that is vivid, alive, and magical, just like this story!

Book Review - The Lightbearers by Nora M. Garcia

The Lightbearers
by Nora M. Garcia
Published 2012
320 Pages

Although outside my usual genre, The Lightbearers sounded intriguing enough that I decided to give it a shot. As the story unfolded, I really did try to find its strengths. However, it fell short, mostly due to pacing issues and unnecessary filler that took away from the obviously well researched
historical data.

The book presents a complicated plot, and attempts to weave the concept of reincarnation with a futuristic storyline about robots taking over the world. It starts out with Jean Crystal, a school principal (whom we later discover has been reincarnated many times, beginning with her first life as Nefertiti), being zapped with a powerful laser by a maniacal Dr. Natas. Dr. Natas is the mastermind behind the revolutionary new ABC school where children are taught by robots. Jean has discovered that Dr. Natas is controlling the schoolchildren with 'protein chips'. And when Dr. Natas realizes that he has been discovered, both Jean and her husband George (who has also been reincarnated from Nefertiti’s husband, Akhenaten) are killed.

More murders ensue at the hands of Dr. Natas, including his assistant’s husband; a detective, who suspects Dr. Natas is responsible for Jean and George’s deaths. Meanwhile, we get a peek into some of the other couples' lives, from before and after Jean and George were killed. We learn how Nefertiti and Akhenaten's lives began as Lightbearers--those who are chosen to continue into another life after their current lives are over.

As the years pass, Dr. Natas' quest for world domination continues as he teams up with his stepson (a graduate of the ABC school). They begin implanting control chips into the general population. Enter the newest reincarnates, post Jean and George: Cassandra and Philip, who devise a plan to interrupt Dr. Natas in his quest. But will their efforts be enough to save the world and all of humanity?

This book tried to pack too much content into one story. Awkward pacing and frivolous filler dragged on and distracted from the historical elements that could have otherwise stood out as a strength. Although the story was not for me, it had its entertaining moments.

Book Review - Passion of an Angel by Suren Fant

Passion of an Angel (Shade of Light, #1)
by Suren Fant
Published 2013

36 Pages

I have read so many novels about demons lately, I thought it would be a nice change of pace to read about angels. I wasn't expecting angels in the Garden of Eden, or a new twist to an old tale about the dawn of time. The story offers up a fresh and interesting perspective, with vivid imagery and some unexpected turns!

When the angels first observe the creation of the Garden of Eden they are intrigued, awestruck even. And the impact starts off a series of events, creating the beginning of human emotions as we know them. One angel finds himself moved by the garden, as well as its new inhabitants... particularly, the female, who is equally enthralled by the angel in all his ethereal beauty. But the angel's own powers in this new world are having unimaginable implications, setting a course for all that's to come.

This is a rather serious story of love and loss, with a cautionary tale about the ripple affect of one's own decisions and actions. Some parts of the story were slow and predictable, but mostly it was lovely and poetic.

Dominic discovers an old family heirloom, and finally gets the answers he has been seeking about Chari. But Chari remains in the dark, and as confused as ever. Alternately, the head of the slayers seems to have gained some insight into his own personal battles. Still, the war rages on. Another great story, with plenty of twists and turns! I am eager to see what happens in the finale (due to be released soon)!

We delve deeper into the world of vampires and werewolves in this third installment of the Disciples of the Damned series. And we get to know the slayers, who keep track of supernatural creatures living alongside the human population. The slayers use an intricate tracking system to maintain order in the city. And yet, no one is safe. Instead, tensions are rising.

Dominic laments over the days when vampires ruled the land. But he has plenty of distractions in this new world! The motorcycle gangs are as unpredictable as ever, and the elusive Florin continues to plot behind the scenes. And then there is the gorgeous slayer, Chari, whose familiarity causes more confusion for Dominic at a time when loyalties are of the utmost importance.

I really enjoyed this book! It's fast paced, well written, and a complimentary addition to the Disciples of the Damned series!

Book Review - The Vypers by April M. Reign

The Vypers (Vampire Biker Series)
Season 1, Episode 2
(The Disciples of the Damned, #2)
by April M. Reign
Published 2013
34 Pages

In this second installment of the Vampire Biker Series we catch up with Dominic, who has returned from the bottom of the ocean after being trapped for two hundred years. Bound in silver, and cast out to sea, Dominic might never have escaped if not for a chance event. Now, he is stronger, driven, and fueled by his quest for vengeance against the vampire, Florin, who betrayed him so many years ago.

Dominic must gain the trust of old enemies if he is to get close to Florin's lair. He finds himself joining forces with other supernatural beings, including the motorcycle gang, the Vypers. It is risky. Still, Dominic will never give up until he has reached the root of the betrayal that has cost him his love and his life. What he doesn't realize is that the Vypers need him as much as he needs them.

Of course, when you partner with your enemies you never know which way things will go. And so, Dominic is thrown off course. To further complicate matters, his path crosses with an important woman from his past... but she is changed, different in so many ways, and her memories seem to hold a different history than that which is embedded in Dominic's heart and mind. So, which memories are true? Moreover, what does this mean about Dominic's history and, more importantly, his future?

I love the character, Dominic! He still holds some old fashioned ways, and yet he wants to understand the time period in which he has been thrust into. And I love that he has taken to his motorcycle like a champ! This book, like the first in the series, is well written, exciting, and a page turner from start to finish! It has a well paced plot with complimentary secondary characters, and effortless humor that is never contrived. A fantastic read! I can't wait to see what the author has in store for the next book!

Featured Author Interview - Jeffrey Perren

Featured Author
Jeffrey Perren

Jeffrey Perren is a novelist, educated in philosophy at UCLA and in physics at UC Irvine. He wrote his first short story at age 12 and went on to win the Bank of America Fine Arts award at 17. Since then he has published at award-winning sites and magazines from the U.S. to New Zealand.

Check out Jeffrey's two published novels, available on Amazon!

Death Is Overrated

Professor Thomas Payne didn't intend to wind up dead on his caving vacation to Wales, and in truth he wasn't the victim. But proving his identity to the police becomes tricky after they pull his passport off the body and conclude the deceased is Dr. Payne, no doubt.

Things go from bogus to baffling when a mysterious phone call at the crime scene leads to the arrest of the young scientist. His fate seems sealed when the victim's fingerprints match the professor's work visa and his employment records disappear altogether.

A tart-tongued American with no identity looks like a pretty good patsy to the detectives eager to close the case. Being accused of killing himself presents the brooding inventor with an interesting puzzle, but taking time to solve it from jail will threaten his deadline to file a patent worth millions.

Intervention by the smitten police captain's sculptress daughter frees Thomas to search for clues to prove his innocence before his invention goes up for grabs. So, it's off around the UK with Terri, one jump ahead of the authorities — and his estranged sociopathic father, a lapsed Quaker who may be the real killer. One slip and claustrophobia will be the least of his problems.

Thomas' journey soon becomes as much about healing his troubled past as recovering his present self. Along the way, he'll battle betrayals by his envious staff, romance the rebellious artist, and suffer harrowing misadventures at historic sites in Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.
Travel — even to find yourself — was never so perilous.

Cossacks In Paris

Rebellious Breutier Armande, a rising young civil engineer in Paris, is drafted into Napoleon's Grande Armeé on the eve of the 1812 Russian campaign.

On a scouting mission in St. Petersburg he meets Kaarina, a Finnish mathematician and daughter of the counselor to Tsar Alexander. The pair soon fall in love. But Kaarina is betrothed to Agripin, a Cossack and a favorite of Tsar Alexander.

When she refuses him, Agripin kidnaps her, aided by Kaarina's envious twin sister, Kaisa. At a time of Europe's brief, uneasy truce, Breutier deserts Napoleon's army and the Tsar's employ to reclaim her. Dodging the vengeance of the world's most powerful rulers sends Breutier on a perilous quest to hunt down the era's most ruthless Cossack.

Interweaving the characters' personal dramas with the epochal events of the following two years forms the core of the story. Historically accurate, the novel climaxes at the moment when, for the first time in 400 years, foreign armies invaded France, leaving behind Cossacks in Paris.

Interview

Jeffrey Perren was kind enough to join us for an interview! We are excited to hear more about his fantastic novels, what inspires him to write, and any future projects!

MBB: How long have you been writing, and what were your earliest inspirations?

JP: I wrote my first short story at my first job in a barbershop at age 12. I've been at it one way and another ever since. Inspirations come in all forms but the early major ones were undoubtedly comic books and movies. I've always loved heroes.

MBB: What approach did you take to begin writing your first novel, Cossacks In Paris

JP: It helps to start with characters one finds interesting. In the case of "Cossacks In Paris" that was easy because he was a real person, a participant in the Battle of Paris in 1814. I found his actions extraordinary, as described in a news story published soon afterward. From there, I read a great deal about the period, practically none of which I knew already. Then, as the saying goes, a miracle occurred and a plot gradually developed around that character and those events. But, as a romantic writer, not a 'realist' in the modern sense, I wanted to do much more than relate interesting history. I wanted to show this character's struggles against powerful men in horrific circumstances, both conspiring to rob him of the opportunity to live and create as he wished. I saw many parallels to current events.

MBB: A fascinating story and characters. Your newest novel, Death Is Overrated, is a mystery set in romantic Wales. Please share with us a little about Death is Overrated

JP: "Death Is Overrated" had its genesis in an old film called DOA. The protagonist is poisoned and has 48 hours before dying to discover who gave him the fatal dose. I spun that idea into a scientist on a caving vacation who is accused – through mistaken identity – of killing himself. He has to prove he’s neither the victim nor the murderer. That, combined with my insatiable travel bug, led to the characters and plot of this romantic mystery.

MBB: Such a great story! Do your books require any special research or preparation to write?

JP: Every single one does. It's an important part of the pleasure of writing one. That's obviously true for historical novels but it's equally true for all the rest. The characters are either scientists or some other creative profession that requires I dig into things I want to know more about. Also, they're usually in settings unfamiliar to me, at least in part. So, I do a lot of research to find out about those places, in order to describe them appropriately.

MBB: What do you like most about writing historical romance?

JP: I find the past infinitely interesting, the varieties of culture and people and the events they've endured, the glorious things they've created. At the same time, I'm a storyteller not an historian. I'm not interested in fictionalized history, in the sense of describing every detail just the way it happened. I prefer, to paraphrase Aristotle, to present things as they might be and ought to be. That naturally leads to a romantic view of things and, since love is an important part of that, a romance as part of the story. Besides, both are great hooks for drama. It provides stellar twin foundations for telling a compelling tale!

MBB: Do you have any advice for other writers who are just starting out?

JP: I’d say: try to lead an interesting life and be a careful observer as you go. I’ve had many adventures over the years and it has helped shape my mind and values. That can’t help but bleed into your writing!

It’s not enough to be a good writer. You must write something interesting, and to do that you have to make good selections of what to write and how. Any good novel is made up of dozens of such choices.

MBB: Great advice! Thanks for sharing. What are your plans for future projects?

JP: I have a third novel in the final editing stages: "Clonmac’s Bridge". It’s a blend of history and mystery based on a real-life discovery. It should be published in a few months.

“A maritime archaeologist raises a medieval monastery span from the mud of the River Shannon, sunken for 1200 years... and finds it perfectly preserved. What could account for this astounding longevity? And why are his colleagues, the Irish government, the media, and the Church conspiring to prevent him learning the secret? Griffin Clonmac will go through hell to find out.”

Next up, I have a 19th century medical drama of a young Irish woman who emigrates to America to become a physician, something very difficult to do at the time.

MBB: Both of these projects sound amazing! Finally, if you were stranded on a deserted island with all the published works of just one author, who would you choose?

JP: The author of "How to Build a Great Boat Without Tools." Seriously, I doubt I could pick one, but if limited to one I'd have to say Alexander Dumas.

MBB: Ha! Great answer! Is there anything else you would like to add?

JP: Yes. I’d like to say a very heartfelt thank you to anyone who has read and reviewed my work and to you for this interview. Also, an even larger Thank You to my wife, for being the divine woman she is and, yet, still choosing me.

That's very kind! Thank you, Jeffrey, for taking the time to visit Moonrise Book Blog, and for sharing with us your insight and experiences. We wish you the best in your future endeavors, and look forward to reading all your novels!
